Figure Skating for kids,
without the pressure.

Balance, edges and artistry on ice. Public skate sessions are the cheapest practice there is, and nearly every Canadian rink has them.

Part of the extended HappyElite library, with stage-tuned activities and its own milestones. HappyElite gives you 5 parent-runnable figure skating activities across four kinds of growth, plus milestones that compare your child to one person only: who they were last month.

Each one takes minutes, uses what you already own, and comes with the words to coach it kindly.

Heart & Mind

Skate the Feeling

Skate a lap as a mood: calm water, thunderstorm, sunrise. Artistry with no marks given.

10 min2 playersIndoorYou’ll need: skates, helmet

Pick a feeling card: calm, storm, floaty, fierce. Skate one width of the rink expressing it with speed, arms and face. The grown-up guesses the feeling, then you swap roles.

The parent cue. There is no wrong answer. Expression is the part of skating no judge can rank.

Physical & Movement

Edge Snakes

Carve S-shapes across the ice on two feet, then dare the same snake on one.

10 minSoloIndoorYou’ll need: skates, helmet

Push once, then steer a lazy S down the ice by tipping both skates left, then right, with no extra pushes. When the two-foot snake is smooth, try short one-foot snake segments.

The parent cue. Look where the snake goes next, not down at the feet.

Team & Character

Follow-the-Leader Lines

Lead a family line around a busy public skate: pick the path, set the pace, keep everyone together.

10 minSmall groupIndoorYou’ll need: skates, helmet

The child leads a line of two or more around the rink, choosing a safe path through traffic and checking over the shoulder that the line is still together. Rotate leaders each lap.

The parent cue. Leading through traffic is reading the play and caring for the group at the same time.

Milestones worth celebrating

What progress looks like, stage by stage.

No leaderboards and no age-group percentiles. These are honest firsts parents tick when their child gets there, at their own pace.

FUNdamentals

  • Gets up alone on ice. Falls, pops back up without the boards, and keeps going.
  • First two-foot glide. Three marching steps into a glide about the length of their own body.

Learn to Train

  • Skates a feeling. Performs a short expressive lap and enjoys being watched doing it.
  • One-foot glide, both sides. Holds a one-foot glide for three seconds on each foot.

Train to Train

  • Controlled stop at speed. Stops on purpose from a confident glide, in both directions.
