Each one takes minutes, uses what you already own, and comes with the words to coach it kindly.
Physical & Movement
Lifeguard Says
Simon Says, pool edition: float! glide! starfish!, water skills smuggled inside a game they already love.
10 min2 playersIndoorYou’ll need: pool access
You are the lifeguard: call commands, "Lifeguard says starfish float!", "Lifeguard says torpedo glide!", "Lifeguard says blow a bubble beard!", mixing floats, glides, treading and breath play. No "lifeguard says"? Anyone who moves owes a silly celebration dance. Swap the lifeguard role halfway; calling the skills is learning the skills.
The parent cue. Sneak the skills they find hardest between three easy, funny ones.
Team & Character
Silly Stroke Follow-the-Leader
One of you invents a stroke, the sillier the better, and the other has to copy it exactly.
10 min2 playersIndoorYou’ll need: pool access, goggles
Take turns as leader for one width each: the leader swims any stroke they like, real, half-real, or fully invented (the "sleepy octopus" is a classic), and the follower copies as precisely as possible. Real strokes sneak in naturally; so does watching another swimmer closely, which is how technique actually spreads. Leading is the quiet skill being built.
The parent cue. Copy their silly strokes with full commitment, being copied seriously is rocket fuel.
Physical & Movement
Treasure Diver
Sunken treasure on the pool floor: dive, grab, surface, celebrate. Breath control disguised as piracy.
10 min2 playersIndoorYou’ll need: pool access, dive toys or coins, goggles
Drop a few dive toys or coins in comfortable-depth water. Your child takes a calm breath, dips under, and retrieves one at a time; you play the surfacing judge who awards style points for smooth, unhurried returns. Add stories: which coin is cursed? Which toy is the captain's? Comfort underwater is the doorway to everything else in swimming.
The parent cue. "Blow tiny bubbles the whole time you're under, like a quiet engine."
